Pro Football
Ranking

How is this ranking different?

This ranking system is unique because it focuses on defensive performance at a granular level, rather than just overall game outcomes. By analyzing individual drives and their impact on the game, we can provide a more accurate representation of.... blah.... that description was written with AI and it sounded kinda professional but was full of crap, I initially went with it, but like all AI gibberish, it doesn't actually convey any meaning. Plus the whole "The Singularity" thing, or what may actually be more realistic... "The Implication", that we are not exactly in danger, but worried enough to give AI whatever it wants. Well, anyways enough of that...

So, why create a new ranking system? Well, if you look at any defensive rankings on the major football sites, they will basically use a simple formula that just sums up the score or yardage of the games and divide it by the number of games played. This is just too dang simplistic, I mean like.. WTH? We hold football metrics as very sacred, the way a farmer looks at the earth and holds it sacred.. and we use a plethora of rules, as you'll see below.

Why is it called MyBad stats? Sounds kinda dumb..

(Ok, this response is AI again, but I kinda liked it)
"No, it's actually pretty clever. In football, when a defense gives up a big play or a touchdown, they often say "my bad" as a way of acknowledging their mistake. This ranking system is designed to highlight those mistakes and hold defenses accountable for their performance.""

How are the scores calculated?

  • It's all about the score baby! The yards are good too, but meh.. yards don't win games. Since we're talking defense, the lower the better and they are calculated on each drive.
  • All scores are not the same! What if your offense fumbles the ball near your own goal line? Should the defense pay for their ineptness? No! What if their offense marches 99 yards down the field and stuffs it in the end zone. The algorithm will take note and give them a full MyBad negative score for all their peers to see, and they will feel shame.
  • What about field goals? If the defense starts with the other team in field goal range, that field goal score will be negligible.
  • Speaking of field goals... all field goal scores count whether they were made or not. Huh? Well, a defense shouldn't be rewarded for the other team having a bad kicker. We assume that the other teams all have competent kickers and will make nearly everything within the 35 yard line, and for field goals longer than that there's a slight adjustment.
  • In some scoring models, a punt return touchdown counts against the defense. Huh? So, you're telling me the defense is not even on the field and the punter acts as their free range safety? Such analytical tomfoolery does not happen in this system.
  • These are just some examples of the rules for the nerds out there, but the main idea is to adjust the ranking based on how much the defense was at fault for allowing scores.

Ok, now what about the Offense?

Take everything you've read until this point and inverse it, but I'm not calling it MyGood ranking. I don't think that's a thing yet.
